'The Gold Hooped Nature' is the debut long player by California dreamer John Davis. Picking up where his 3" CD-R 'At Home And Afeild' left off, this disc is a scenic set of audio drift that easily zigzags dense passages of analog crunch as well as blank vistas of crystalline tones via guitars, found sounds, contact microphones, tape speed oscillations, field recordings and a small battery of effects. John's study as a Filmmaker & Photographer definitely plays some roll here, with any number of landscapes (real or imagined, inner or outer) being brought to mind. Way less head than heart though, with plenty of these tracks dipped in a romantic glaze that betrays any tendency to over conceptualize drone / ambient / whatever music. It's more wide-eyed sunset, lost west coast stargazing than that. And I suspect the endless Midwest horizons of John's youth are in there as well.

Already released as a series of 3" CD-R's, we're proud to finally drop Taiga Remains' blazing white-out guitar suite 'Ribbons Of Dust'. Although originally conceived as stand-alone pieces, the four tracks that make up this hour long disc can easily be seen as one continuous meditation on total delay emptiness as channeled through the electric six-string drone worship of Flying Saucer Attack and Andrew Chalk. Not at all the overtone distortion that Mr. Cobb usually trips in, these verses seem to have been written during heavy snowed in nights that lapsed into early morning. Vibrating, soothing, disturbing, and completely built for headphone trips to the stratosphere. Comes in a chipboard pack with black ink letterpressed artwork.

01: Corridors (25:20) CLIP CLIP
Latest installment from the on-going collaboration between filmmaker Paul Clipson & musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Paul's Super8 films, shot entirely in New York City, channel the blissed out states of color drenched psychadellia explored by Brakage as well as lovely black and white still life's that reminisce on Ozu's 'pillow shots' & Chantel Akermans monumental portrait of Pre-Giuliani New York 'Letters Home'. Jefre's music is culled from the same sessions that launched his 2007 release on Students Of Decay 'Shinning Skull Breath', (the two share a track in common). Billowy clouds of distorted guitar expand out into long passages of muffled static and fuzzed out melody.

Originally released in 2006 on Important Records as a limited run LP in their ongoing Arts & Crafts Series, Root Strata is proud to present the reissue of The Anchorite, a dazzling jewel in Smiths substantial discography. Performed live to two track with the aide of tape loops and prerecorded takes, the music maintains a drifting, painterly quality that easily evokes the American west as much as the European east which Smith so lovingly mines for his Hala Strana recordings. Sepia toned and tinged with a luminous distortion, The Anchorite, as the name suggests, is reserved, pulled back and solemn, some kind of hermetic prayer for the end of the world. Beautifully repackaged with new artwork in a heavy black & white gatefold CD case with offset printing.

01: Tendrils In Vigne (12:00) MP3
'Tendrils In Vigne' is Gregg Kowalsky's Mills Collage graduate thesis project, a down right gorgeous slow burner of all acoustic instruments. Originally composed for laptop, Gregg transcribed and scored his music for an ensemble of 25 people that includes everything from a string section to a Shakuhachi player. Microcosmic loops expand into complex forms of geometry featuring voices and exploding drum kits.
Mesmerizing.

Originally released in 2005 as a limited edition CD-R on Yellow Swans' JYRK label, this three-way collab now gets a proper run on wax. Recorded in Oakland at the Huffin House before the Swans made the retreat back to Portland. Despite the weight of these players when they rock alone, this jam really never gets into full on white out territory. Instead, it's loaded to the brim with wavy neon distortion and soothing low end that occasional drops out into huge washes of emptiness. The opening passage of GMS guitar flecks sympathizing with Karl's string wash is alone worth the price of admission. Red vinyl with lime green splatter.

Another transmission from the Australian house of Music Your Mind Will Love You. This one has been a long time coming. Taken from various recordings over a period from 05/06, the core duo of brother and sister Michael and Kristina Donnelly are joined by EON in a killer trio setting. Not as psych-acid as some of the recent BOTOS output. Not to say the group doesn't kick up a good racket, it's just way spacious and soft sounding at points, like seeing various twinkling stars through hazy fog. Lots of dreamy moments of quite acoustic strum and subtle synth weirdness. The usual battery of instruments, toy and otherwise, are in effect. And of course, LOADS of percussive implosions...but not at all heavy handed. Sounds like a Sunday morning jam with your best friends outside in a garden just after tea. A joyful noise that's pleasing to the skull.

New nature jams from the Northern California peace crew. Brian Pyle (one half of the core Starving Weirdos duo) his brother Jon, and their bro Spencer traverse the twilight moon as RV Paintings. 'Trinity Rivers' is a suite of three nocturnal jams, way heavy on the hypnotic vibe. Wine glasses, holographic guitar circles and skittery drum lines unite to form a fantasy world- but not in color - all black and white with smears of metallic sliver. Eno circa 'On Land' with Ellen Fullman's Long String Instrument after a midnight swim on the ocean. This is by far one of the most beautiful and totally dark audio documents out of the Weirdos camp.

Slightly shedding back the layers of billowing twilight distortion and murmur, these songs reveal more of the acoustic guitar & vocal core that has always been at the center of Grouper's tape hiss blues. This record is a stunning document of shimmering dream melodies that feel a lot more like ancient rituals rather than songs. Playing to her strengths, Liz has created her most arresting material to date. "Lost in a Dreamworld, West Coast Natural"

On Earth , is the first studio document created by the group, recorded with Marcelo Spinna at the Space in May 2006 with production assistance from Pete Swanson (D. YELLOW SWANS). While previous CD-R releases were entirely improvised, On Earth is comprised of three untitled pieces composed by the group with elements of restrained improvisation. Musically, each piece has a specific concern, ranging from extremely subtle microtonal shifts to distorted crashes of intervals against one another. On Earth captures the reductive BONUS sound with all the sustained tones and sparkling textures, but with a more focused and succinct delivery.

Slowly drifting guitar tones run head first into blown out harmonium drones and the broken edges of homemade instruments. These songs aren't drifting as much as they are lost at sea. Metallic drones for the nature set.
"This 3", near 20 minute cd-r captures more of Davis' gorgeous and glacial looped soundscapes of scrape and creak and groan, deftly smoothed out into rich harmonious drones. The sound is definitely metallic, but like metal wrapped in gauzy grey clouds and held under water. A soft somnambulent drift, hovering somewhere between the dark drone of Coleclough and the fuzzy processed soundworlds of Christian Fennesz. Streaks of glistening shimmer reverberate and gently vibrate, the resulting hum is rife with muted overtones and muffled feedback, even occasional crackle give the pieces the effect of some unearthed sonic artifact. As always, totally captivating.
The packaging is very reminiscent of an old naturalist's display case, a small brown cardboard box, with a leaf and butterfly motif screened in green and metallic gold ink on the top (by local artist Chris Thorson). Inside a hand sewn, mini booklet, detailing the study of nature and the steps in getting your own recordings, and most impressive of all, nestled on a soft bed of billowy white cotton, an actual piezo contact microphone, which is a beautiful object on its own, but as the included note suggests, the mic may be used to make your own field recordings"

"Who would have though that a little cd-r from some unknown group called the Starving Weirdos would have caused such a ruckus? But stir up a ruckus it did! We have been selling that first disc like hotcakes, and why the heck not, a glorious noisy blast of free rock avant drone, No Neck by way of the Dead C by way of the Yellow Swans by way of Avarus by way of Sunroof! by way of Birchville Cat Motel. Or something like that. For more on how we discovered the Starving Weirdos, or more precisely how they discovered us, check out the review of their debut cd elsewhere on the site. So now we have this here brand new double cd-r and it's as good as if not better than the first (it features one track that was on the first record, but everything else is new and previously unreleased). The duo of Brian Pyle and Merrick McKinlay is truly adept at crafting ramshackle conglomerations of clattery percussion, weird warbling guitars, abstract ambient soundscapes, moaning horns, shuffling almost-rhythms, wide open expanses of random sounds, soothing and mesmerizing, a gloriously shimmery clatter and shuffle, rattle and wheeze. Five lengthy tracks spread out over two discs. Fans of ANY of the above mentioned bands will be in drone rock free folk bliss out heaven!" - Aqurius Records
"Fascinating drone/Improv madness from this impossibly obscure Californian combo, with echos of the backwoods psychedelia of the freer end of the free folk scene and the no-fi wilfulness of The Dead C. The group strike a perfect balance between drift and purpose, sprawl and discipline, noise and non-noise. The results are rough but quite gorgeously radiant. "Plastic Gagaku" envelopes an irregular percussive snap, shifting lines of feedback and interjections from plastic toys in a dense fog of reverb. The 20 minute "Friday the 13th Pt II" moves dreamily through a series of vaguely narcotic atmospheres, but with great conviction. There are sections that sound rather like gamelan metallophones played through old 60s fuzzboxes, and if that doesn't pique your intrest, nothing will." -The Wire

Like the endless lull of the surf, if the waves were made up of huge bass speakers, buzzy synths and undulating electronic osscilations. Like the clang and clatter of industrial machinery, the buzz of airplanes flying overhead, the rumbling of construction work down the block, all timestretched into a soothing, swaying, soporific drone. "Another ultra limited blast of ambient free noise form Bay Area duo the Yellow Swans. This time around they are DRIFT Yellow Swans (their name includes a different 'd' word every time) and the drift couldn't be more appropriate as this lp finds the 'Swans at their most, well, drifty. Three lengthy tracks of shimmering slithering ambience. Electronic grit is smeared over gentle finger picked electric guitars, melodies become more and more abstract, shimmers grow into drones, which grow into sheets of rumble and skree before fading back into swirling slow-shifting tranquility, peppered with clinking chiming industrial clatter. The final 20 minute track builds into an almost Skullflowery wall of distorted guitar, warm and suffocating, before quickly dissipating into gauzy clouds of melodic whir and barely-there drone and rumble. As always, quite lovely." - Aqurius Records

01: Instructional Sculpture for Children (26:05) MP3
"Instructional Sculpture for Children" Is a half hour soundtrack to a recent video work by John, and is composed of unprocessed contact mic recordings from the San Francisco Exploratorium. Subtly mixing these with home made electronic drone waves, John's CD is a beautiful pastel like dreamscape full of vibrating creatures and small explosions. Edition of 50 with 3 color silk screened covers.
"The undulating drones and scraped loops which provide the backbone for the debut recording for San Francisco's John Davis could have easily been plucked from a Phill Niblock or Andrew Chalk composition; but in fact their origins lie in the interactive exhibitions found at the Exploratorium, SF's one of a kind museum of science, art, and human perception. If you've never had the opportunity to get to the Exploratorium, it's well worth the visit as there's tons of contraptions designed to illuminate, educate, and amaze. Armed with a mini-disc recorder, a good mic, and a willingness to explore, Davis captured many of plinks, plonks, and bongs from the Exploratorium's many exhibits that demonstrate any number of acoustic phemonena. He then ran these field recordings through a battery of Max/MSP patches to arrive at this spiralling cloud of pixelated smears, golden drones, and a variety of those aforementioned plinks, plonks, and bongs. Davis certainly draws from the aesthetics of Stephan Mathieu and Fennesz, adding a mechanical and metallic clamour into the mix." - Aqurius Records

"The film is a beautifully abstract and paranoid impression of Southern California, filmed on grainy Super8, with lots of dizzyingly hypnotic footage of telephone wires, helicopters, cityscapes, gorgeously blurred out traffic lights and tail lights and street lights. There's late afternoon silhouettes, fuzzy smears of neon, rain drops on glass, cranes and docks, abstract streaks of passing cars and slick roadways, hillsides covered in windmills, the sun reflected on the sea, highways and green hills. So lovely. And haunting. As are the accompanying sounds created by Cantu-Ladesma, an ominous, buzzing, vocal drone, affected to the point that it still sounds organic, but not like a voice, more like streaks of sound, greys and blacks and browns, all smeared into blurred soundscapes of purr and whir and thrum, that perfectly compliment the shaky camera work, the grainy film stock, and the gorgeously and ominously mundane subject matter." - Aqurius Records

I have a feeling that a similar sort of restlessness is behind The Holy See - a Tarentel side project with two thirds of the band (Ledesma and Jim Redd). The albumstarts with an unholy electronic shitstorm, opening up a portal to hell and getting out of the way as devils and demons explode through it." - FAKEJAZZ

"Jewelt Galaxies manages to turn the aural aspects of space travel into something wholly organic. That's not an easy task. Yet, this trio combine so many conflicting elements and do so with such skill that everything fits perfectly and flows naturally. Take the last track on this three track CD-R, "Tintinnabulations." Sparse, heavily-treated electric guitar adds the spacious elements of the black stellar vacuum. It's disjointed enough that you can never quite get a firm grasp on it. The use of bells and other chromatics are what add the earth-element to the proceedings. It's an excellent contrast, but the varying sounds work together wonderfully."
